Windows update and lost mail

I am operating an older system with Windows 98 and I
recently downloaded and installed all of the critical
available online Microsoft updates. Since then, I have
lost all of the e-mail that was left in my previous inbox
of Outlook express. Is there a way I can retrieve
it....much of it was unopened and unanswered. Help. N.
