Windows XP can't record sound any more.

I have been trying to use my sound recorder after a break of a few months.
For some reason I am getting the error message
Another application is recording audio. Stop recording with this other
applciation and then try to record with Sound Recorder again. I did find
this message in a solution for Word 2002, but I don't have that version and I
cannot find any recording device so I don't know how to switch it off.
Please can anyone help.

Try posting your question on a Windows XP dedicated news group such as
microsoft.public windowsxp.video
or
microsoft.public windowsxp.music
