I cannot open Word - it closes with the message "Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close"
I have uninstalled and re-installed without success

In addition to seeing
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm, as Chad and g-n-o
have suggested, be aware that you're a couple of updates behind if you're
running Word 2000 SR-1. Once you've sorted out the immediate problems, I
suggest you go to Office Update and download the latest patches.
