Word 2000 won't open

I have tried to follow guidance in **/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWordContent.htm but have not been able to get Word 2000 to run. Worked fine several days ago. Apparent corruption as no virus found. Opens using Run>winword.exe /a option. I renamed Normal.dot to Normal.old but this did not fix. Looked for Startup files but nothing below Startup in path. Renamed HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ etc ]Office\9.0\Word\Data by changing to oldData. Did not fix anything
If I buy Word 2003 and load, will this override the file corruption or will I still have same problem

have you tried to put the office disk in there and tried
to repair it that way? sometimes that helps too.

hope that helped.

Installing 2003 is unlikely to resolve the problem. When you start Word
using the /a switch, Word opens in its default install state bypassing
(ignoring) and add-ins, templates, normal.dot, printer driver,
customisations of any type whatsoever. That proves that there is nothing
wrong with Word itself.

I recommend that you go through the Help FAQ again and double check every
step.

Yes, I have used the original Office CD but that did not
help. I will try the help file steps again, and then
perhaps uninstall all of Office 2000 and reinstall.
Seems like having a virus is better than a corrupted file!

Reinstalling will not help. If Word works correctly when you start it with
the /a switch, then this means that the problem is with Normal.dot, the
Registry, or an add-in. You seem to have eliminated Normal.dot and the
Registry, but just looking in Word's Startup folder does not eliminate
add-ins, as Word 2000 can have COM add-ins that don't show up in the Word or
Office Startup folder. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm
