word 2003 close function, X in right corner grayed out

Since installing office 2003 (windows XP), I have had an intermittent problem
with word documents and being able to close them by using the X in the upper
right hand corner. At times, the X to close Word will be grayed out (the X to
close the specific document is highlighted and can be clicked). The only way
to get out of the program is to go to the file button and close. Other times,
both X's appear and are selectable to close the document/function. Is there a
fix for this so that I always have access to close the entire function from
the X button rather than going to the file and close function on the left?
