Closing out last Word doc, still leaving Word open

I like the pre-2007 way of displaying an option in the upper-right corner of
closing out the document you are working on, but still leaving the program
open. In 2007, however, this isn’t the case, as the upper-right corner
presents only one x, regardless of how many docs are actually open at the
time. I did a search through this forum and came across the suggestion to
uncheck the option to “Show all windows in the taskbar.†The problem there is
that while I do get the option to close out that last document, without
shutting down Word, only the current document is in the taskbar. Is there a
way to make Word show all the documents in the taskbar, and also, keep that
option of closing out the last document, without shutting down Word?

The easiest thing is to add the Close button to the QAT and use that to
close the document.

OK I did that. I still would prefer a dual set of symbols to click on in the
upper-right corner, because I'd have to either click on that QAT close window
all the time (unless I knew for a fact that I had more than one more doc
open), which after years of closing out docs in the right corner, seems a bit
unnatural. At any rate, thanks again for the answer.

I can see where it would be unnatural. I've had and used a Close button on
the Standard toolbar in every version of Word for so long now that it is
second nature for me--harder for me to think to use the X.

Why not simply use CTRL+F4 or CTRL+W to close the active document? This will
always leave Word open.

I normally do use keyboard shortcuts--been using Ctrl+W for a while--but
when my hand is on the mouse for whatever reason, its nice to keep it there
and just click on something to get the job done.
