Word 2003 maximize screen too low

C

When I hit the maximize button in Word 2003 it does not cover the top of the
desktop. It leaves an inch or so at the top and the status bar does not show.
If I restore I can see it all and I can move it to the top of my screen, but
when I maximize, the program drops down the inch or so. I tried a suggested
solution of not using Word as my Outlook editor, but that did not work. I saw
another instance of this problem here, but there was no answer given. Anyone
have an idea? BTW I have all updatres installed and this does not happen with
other Office programs. Thanks

I am having the same issue! It was fine yesterday and today it's doing this.
And same thing - it does not happen when I use any other MS Office 2003
applications. Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

Sorry not to provide any help, but instead I'll pile on.

I have this issue with ALL of my Office 2003 applications. However, it
only presents itself randomly.

This topic has been bounced around quite a bit in the groups, with many
blaming it on Outlook using Word. Unfortunately, that doesn't explain
why it happens on my machine (HP TC4400) with InfoPath, Access, Excel,
and OneNote.

Thanks for rekindling this thread. Hopefully someone out there will
have a solution for us.

It sure is a bizarre problem. It seems to come up about every couple of
months, but no resolution yet. The problem is that so few people have the
problem, it is difficult to diagnose. We have users at work with HP TC4200
and TC4400s and no one has experienced it.

The only items that I suggest checking are:

Check that the graphics and printer drivers are the latest available and
reinstall them. Test with a different printer driver.
Test it in Windows Safe Mode.
Make sure that you are not running Word in a windows compatibility mode.
Make sure that the graphics is set up correctly and that the desktop and
screen size match.

I believe that the problem is associated with using Word as the Outlook
email editor and opening Outlook first.

I would have thought that 99.99'% of users that have Word set as the email
editor would open OL first, as it is normally the first application to be
opened for the day (I certainly do) - so surely many more users would have
hit the problem? I'd like to see some constructive reasoning or better still
proof that selection of email editor is responsible.

Well, I just have a vague memory of Outlook being involved. In some cases,
apparently, this involves dual monitors, but see also

:

Hello,
I too have the same problem.
i have found that you can minimize Outlook and then Maximze WORD and it does
work. Until you Max Outlook again and it comes back.
Then it returns at random intervals.
I also found that this cures the issue for now.

Close word, Go to outlook and click New mail, this then opens word full
screen, as normal.

Well I've just reread those links and my conclusion from them is that we
still haven't got to the bottom of the problem. Both John Mac and I have
suggested that the Word Data Key is corrupt, but deleting it doesn't seem to
work.

Starting Word in Safe Mode using the /a does seem to make Word open
correctly, but creating a new normal.dot doesn't seem to resolve the
problem. This suggests that it may be an unusual add-in - possibly in
Outlook. The problem is that I don't think that any MVP or Microsoft has
been able to reproduce the bug, hence there is no solution.

If you get a recurrence of this bug that enables you to do some diagnosis,
would you try the following tests please.

Try opening Word in Safe Mode and leave it minimised to the Task Bar. When
you open a New email in Outlook, does Word now open correctly?
If you reboot the PC, does it resolve the problem temporarily?
Does the PC use dual monitors?
Have you tried deleting the Word Data Key from the registry?

I'm having the same issue. It does seems to be caused by Outlook. This is
only happening on one of our workstations, and we have Word as our email
editor.
I've noticed that the size of the gap is exactly the size of the taskbar. It
seems that when maximizing, Word thinks the taskbar is up at the top of the
screen, but when I move the taskbar to the top of the screen, it pushes the
window down even further. I'd like to post a screenshot here, but I'm not
sure how to do that.

Are you able to confirm that starting Word in Safe Mode first resolves the
problem? From Start, Run, type in

WinWord /a

and press enter. Minimise Word and then open Outlook. Open up an email and
see if the screen is now full size or still short from the top.

SOLUTION: I have found a solution for the MS Word incorrectly
maximizing issue. I have taken a valid Word Data registry section and
put it in the affected Word's registry. Here's how to solve your
problem:

1. Either download the registry file from here:
http://home.nextra.sk/markod/word.reg or obtain a working Word Data
registry section.

2. Run the above mentioned file on the PC with the malfunctioning MS
Word and select Yes afterwards.

You're all done. Now run MS Word and see if my solution helped.

PS: I had this issue on my notebook. Word maximized incorrectly when
being run with and also without Outlook. I cannot guarantee that my
solution will help you, but I hope it will since it helped me.

Cheers!

You should have been able to accomplish the same thing by deleting the Word
Data key in the Registry and letting Windows build a new one.

Well I tried only deleting Word's data key, but Word recreated a bad
one again. The only thing that helped was to use a working data key
from my second PC.

Bizarre and interesting. The data key must be collecting some duff
information from something - but what. It would be useful to examine the
contents of the data keys side-by-side to establish where the difference
lays. That might point to the source of the problem.

It's definitely Outlook that's causing the problem here.

Try this: create a new outlook message, close it, then fire up Word -
the problem happens. Shut down Word & kill the process that's still
hanging about in Task Manager. Start Word again - problem has gone
away - this is irrespective of what's been done with the registry key.
Even after Word is working OK, creating a new Outlook message will
always make the problem come back again.

Turning off Word as the editor in Outlook does fix the problem, but I
would like to be able to use it.
