word 2003 slow start, or no start on fresh i

I had a recent system failure so decided to take the opportunity to get a new
hard drive and a fresh start.

After loading Office 2003 everything was fine until I tried Word.

An error message stated that Word failed to start last time, and then starts
me in safe mode. After I close it, the next time I start Word it starts
right away, but any subsequent start takes about 4 minutes to start.

I've renamed Normal.dot to normal.old and it will start right away the next
run, but after that it goes back to the safe mode start, or the 4 minute
delay start. From what I can tell there haven't been any new macros,
although I did install winfax, but I don't think it ran any macros, at least
I can't find any.

Sometimes after it does start I get another message: "com
error.\OfficeAddin.cpp line 220 (232)
Code=88a01a8

I also ran a virus check, clean.

I've removed winfax, and all files I could find associated with it. I also
removed Word. I then use a reg cleaner.

The I reloaded Word from the CD. It ran fine the first time, but on the
second run it again took 3 - 4 minutes before it fully loaded. Eventually it
did load, but it just tokk a loooooongggg time.

What other things should I be loking at?

Thanks!

Yes I read the article and folowed every step.

Before I did that I removed winfax and all traces of it I could find.

Then I followed each step.

It did start right up for a few times, but then fell back into the "safe
mode" and 4 minute delay.

Any other ideas, anyone?

Thanks.

Delete and reinstall the printer making sure it is the latest driver.
Rename normal.dot as normal.old making sure that you only have ONE
normal.dot by searching from Explorer.
Go to Word Startup folder (Programme File, Microsoft Office) and make sure
it is empty.
Start Word and run Detect and Repair from the Help menu.

I followed the steps, but there is still the delay.

The odd thing is that eventually it always opens and runs fine, but only
after a delay of about 90 seconds. I thought the delay might be the result
of my AVG virus scanner, but even after turning off AVG the delay persisted.

Any other suggestions?

I really appreciate your assistance.

Is your printer locally connected (i.e.. to your parallel or USB port)?

What happens when you start in Safe Mode? From Start, Run type in

WinWord /a

and press enter. Does Word start correctly and quickly now?

Yes, when I run with "/a" it fires right up.

My printers are all USB, I've tried unpluging them, and it doesn't seem to
make a difference.

That Word works when you use the /a switch which proves that it is not a
Word problem but a problem with an add-in. Please reread the article on
troubleshooting start-up problems and follow the steps carefully: you will
then find the problem.

I followed the step, but there's still the delay.

I deleted the reg "data" folder key
Deleted "normal.dot"
Used the install cd to remove the "word" component
Removed the "start up" folder
Rebooted

Still have the delay
winword.exe /a starts it right away
When I clos word sometimes it still shows up in task manager process window

No macros installed

I do appreciate the help a lot.

Thanks

I'm lost for ideas right now. It just has to be an add-in problem but you
should have found it following the guide. I'll mull over this for a while.

I also went into msconfig and disabled most of the services and startups.
Same results.

Another thing...

When opening an Excel SS it took a few minutes and there was a message on
the status bar "Checking for Viruses".

Could that be what's happening with Word?

I have no idea what virus program is at work. I use AVG but shut that down.
The system (a Compaq) had some Norton stuff, but I don't run it.

O

ooman

Yes.

I've been through every step, and then some.

I have removed winfax, there are no macros, I've deleted the entire office
group, erased every file and the referenced registry entries. I've tried
starting with the bare minimum programs. All to no avail.

I guess the one good point is that once word does start, it seems to work
fine and is stable.

The one feature that doesn't work is the clipart insert, for some reason it
doesn't find online clipart. There are a couple, but I think they're from my
system library.
Thanks forr any and all assistance!

The troubleshooting steps don't include deleting the Office group or erasing
files or Registry entries (except the Word Data key). What you don't say is
whether Word works correctly when you start in Office Safe Mode or whether
you've dealt with Normal.dot, add-ins, or the printer driver, which, along
with the Word Data key in the Registry, are the essentials.

The complete uninstall step was taken only after all other remedies proved
fruitless.

I did remove all printer drivers, ones associated with hardware as well as
drivers tied to various software programs such as Quicken and Paperport.

Also stopped as many processes as possible, deleted ‘normal.dot’, deleted
the registry ‘data’ folder, and everything else suggested, but to no avail.

When ‘winword.exe /a’ is run winword starts right up, but not so when it’s
started normally.

Note that this is a pretty fresh install of XP. So far it hasn't been
loaded up with the usual junk that accumulates on systems.
