Word 2007 numbered paragraphs

I need to number paragraphs beneath heading styles.
1 heading 1
1.1 paragraph 1
1.2 paragraph 2

2 heading 1
2.1 heading 2
2.1.1 paragraph 1
2.1.2 paragraph2

Outline numbering is what you need, the following articles have not been
updated for 2007, but the process is the same just in slightly different
places.
First set up outline numbering, by carefully following the instructions at

In the scheme you present, you could have a text paragraph numbered as 1.1
and a heading 2 paragraph numbered as 1.1. If that is what you want, it may
not be possible to set up a multilevel list for this--and it would be
confusing to readers as well. A fix would be to number the text paragraphs
as a,b, or some such.
