Word 2008 .docx Compatibility Issue with Word 2007

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Having created a Word 2008 .docx document and checked compatibility with Word 2007 as OK, when opened on a PC there were frequent cases of spaces between words missing.
I followed advice from another Mac user to save as a .doc on the Mac and then open on the PC and to then save it as .docx. This seemed to work OK.
But why does the .docx format transferred from the Mac to the PC have the above problem?

Generally this is a combination of any of these three factors;

1- Differences in fonts used on the Mac v. those on the PC (even if the
names of the fonts are the same the metrics can be different)

2- Differences in the printer drivers on the systems involved

3- Lack of updates on either or both of the versions of Office

If you stay with the fonts supplied with Office 2007/08 & make sure all
software is fully updated you should have minimal issues like this.
