Word 2008 Header/Footer Problem

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Weird problem. Headers and footers have been working fine. Now when I open a document with a header or footer already in it, I am unable to edit them. When I double-click on the header or footer, if it is a picture I just get the option to format the picture - but I can't delete it or add a different header or footer. If I use a new document, I can create a header or footer, but as soon as I save it, close it and re-open it, the same thing happens. I am unable to edit the header or footer. It doesn't matter if the header or footer is a picture or just straight text. When I e-mail the document to someone else, they have no problem with editing them. Thanks for any suggestions.

Headers and footers are components of section breaks.

A document can have several section breaks.

Some or all of the section breaks can be "Protected" to prevent editing.

Have a look under Tools menu: if you see "Unprotect document" that's the
problem. Click it to release the protection. You may need the password.

Hope this helps

Thanks John. That didn't work as the document was not protected. However, I renamed the normal template and had Word recreate it and THAT worked. Thanks again.

Thanks Kate: I didn't think of that one in relation to this fault :)

Had you told me you could not edit headers/footers in "new" documents
created by you, I would have become suspicious of Normal then.

Thanks for posting back.
