Word 97 not reading past line 1999

EJones

Good day everyone:

I am running a mail merge from an Excel 97 spreadsheet to
Word 97. Everything was running fine (save the occasional
DDE error) until I got to my 2000th record.

When I try to open the data source as a full spreadsheet,
I get the pop-up box with the message "Word is unable to
open the Data Source". I then can attempt to open it as a
filtered spreadsheet and that will (sometimes) work.
However, any information I put in past line 1999 in my
spreadsheet is non-searchable to the mail merge--it just
will not see it.

Tech specs--Office 97 Suite SR-2. Excel spreadsheet is a
single sheet, 45 col. X 2004 rows. No macros running on
either the spreadsheet or the Word Document.

Any help would be wonderful. Thank you.

Hi EJones,

Mmmm. If you create a new Word document and link up to this
sheet and run a test mail merge - does it exhibit the same
behavior?

How about if you create a new Excel workbook and create a
"dummy sheet" with 2000+ records (use AutoFill, for example).
Will that work?

I'm guessing the problem is either a damaged *.doc or *.xls
file. More likely the Excel file...
