Word Art operation drags in Publisher

M

Michele

I use Publisher 2003 on Windows XP with 2 GB RAM. I don't have much else
running. When I want to put say, a simple Word Art title on a single page
document, the performance time really drags. It is like it is loading a heavy
sized document. If I want to nudge it a little to left or right, man, it
takes 10 -15 seconds for one maneuver. Seems longer. Is there some graphic
setting I can change?

Mary Sauer

Check out your video/graphics driver. It may need upgrading.
To check to see if it is your driver, slide the acceleration down on your
adapter
Control panel, display folder, settings tab, advanced button, troubleshoot tab.

If sliding down the acceleration helps, go to the manufacturer's web site of
your graphics card and look around for an updated driver.

Hi Mary,

I went and slid my display.troubleshoot. It was full. I put it down two
notches. Still the 15-20 delay. So I am trying to find my driver info for
graphics card. Went to my computer, hardware and device manager. Nothing is
jumping out at me as a graphic card. Where would I find that exactly. This
computer is about 5 mos old. I am told high - performance.

In the Display folder, settings tab, advanced button, adapter tab. It will have
the name in this area.

As Mary has said, it is quite likely a problem with your graphics card or
driver, although with such a large delay as you have mentioned there are
other things that could be wrong. Click your Start button and select Run. In
the little box that appears type in "dxdiag" and click the OKbutton and a
diagnostic tool will load from which you can check your system. Click the
System tab in the dialog for details of your machine and click the Display
tab for details of your graphics card. Post back with the main details.

Ditto on both counts! Parents could do with a new system (I might build
them one sometime soon); a desktop isn't so much use for me.

Ok, before I download a 34 MB driver...I went up on the Web site link your
provided. There are two options and also other links. I want to make sure I
download the right one. Also, this unit is 5 mos. old. How could I have
gotten a driver that is over 2 years old?

The machine is 5 months old, the card used in it was first released
quite some time before that.

From the group archives:

The computer is mass-produced on a production line. The hard drive is
filled with data from a master disk, and that master disk does not
change often. Every time it changes, they have to go through a long
testing procedure to make sure it works - which they don't like to do
very often. They cannot afford the time or money to change it every time
a new driver comes out (each piece of hardware in the system has a
driver, and new ones are being developed all the time). Also, even if
they did this, if a new driver were released after the machine left the
factory but before you bought it, (which, given the amount of time the
machine will sit on a shelf before you buy it, is quite likely), you
would not have the latest drivers on your brand new machine.
