WORD ATTACHMENT IS CONVERTED TO .DAT FILE

A user sends a mail with a simple word attachment to
Mr "X" an external receipient. Mr "X" receives this
attachment as a "winmail.dat" file. If the same
attachment is sent from a different machine within the
company, to the same receipient (Mr "X"), it does not
convert the attachment. However, if the attachment is sent
from the first machine to different external receipt
(Mr "Y") then the attachment is received ok. Firstly, how
does this happen, and secondly, how do we go about
resolving this?
