Word cannot compare a master document

I am trying to compare two documents, but Word 2003 says "Word cannot compare
a master document. Try comparing one of the documents contained in the
master document. It does not specify which document it is talking about.
Using XP.

OK, if you open both documents in Word, then switch to the Outline view, do you
see hyperlinks to other files, and padlocks in either (or both)?
