Okay, then it's possible that the Norton Office Plugin is still
registered in Windows, even if you uninstalled Norton. Search
for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on your system (include hidden and
system files/folders) and note the directory path where it is
located. Close all open applications. From Windows, click on
Start | Run. In the Open dialog box, type the command (including
quotes):

Regsvr32 -U "C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll"

Replace <path> with the directory path for your OfficeAV.dll
file. Click on OK. You only have to run this command once (not
every time you restart your computer). You should get the
message: "DllUnregisterServer in C:\<path>\OfficeAV.dll succeeded."

It's not installed. Even though I found 2 versions of the .dll, regsvr fails
to uninstall either. I assume this means that they're not installed in the
first place. Would you know what registry entries norton makes? I'm not
afraid to remove them by hand.

Sorry, I don't know where (or if) Norton puts anything in the
registry. If an artifact Norton Office Plugin is causing the
problem, then unregistering officeav.dll is usually sufficient.
Have you tried renaming the officeav.dll files to officeav.old?

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827732 "You receive a
command cannot be performed error message when you double-click
to open a document from Word 2003" for another possibility.
