Word Count Question

I am typing a 26-page brief for an attorney. It is vitally important that I
know how many words are in this document. When I highlight the text and
select "word count," it is not highlighting the footnotes. Is the word count
including the word count in these footnotes, even though they are not
highlighted?

How do I make sure that the word count is including literally every word?

Don't highlight the text. Just click anywhere in the document (so that the
selection is collapsed to a single point) and then run the word count.
