Word Crashes/Corrupted Document - Word 2001 running in Classic Modeunder OS X 10.2.8

I can no longer open word docs it seems. I have reinstalled Word,
reinstalled classic support and have tried to update Word 2001, although
it won't seem to let me. I have two questions:

1. How can I install the updates running OS X 10.2.8, but under the
classic mode? When I try it says it can't find the applications where it
expects to find them. (They are located in OS9 Applications).

2. What would cause Word to all of a sudden not be able to open documents?

When I try to open any saved (from email) Word docs, the icon is
different, and it immediately gives me an error saying the document is
corrupted would I like to fix it. If I say Yes, it crashes Word and
crashes OS 9. If I say NO, sometimes it will continue with trying to
open the doc, but again most often times it crashes Word, and sometimes
both Word and OS9.

I have not changed any configurations to the system lately to cause this.

Hi Shelly,

Your first problem (inability to open Word docs) is probably due to
insufficient Preferred memory assigned to Word 2001, though there are one or
two other possible causes. The second problem (inability to update) is
probably due to the fact that you incorrectly reinstalled Word 2001. You
cannot properly reinstall an Office application without first doing a full
removal of Office.

I suggest you spend some time here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootWord2001.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another browser
for this site.)

If I were you, I would first remove and reinstall Office *properly*,
including rebuilding the desktop. Then I would deal with the memory issue.

If you run into problems while trying these procedures, please post back.

Thanks for the reply, however you misunderstood my second problem which
is applying updates. The *update application* not the Word Application
is the problem with question 2. The updater doesn't seem to know to look
under the hood of my OS X to find my OS 9 applications.

I fixed problem 1 by removing the Word preferences file (not the entire
office application) and now it is working smoothly again. Allocated
memory couldn't have been an issue since it's worked fine with the 50
meg assigned to it for the last 2 years...so I did other digging to find
the preferences fix.

Does it give you the option of finding the applications?

Is the folder really called OS 9 applications, because mine is called
Applications (Mac OS 9), and I think that's the default. Did you change it,
perhaps?

Are you already in Classic when you command the installer to run?

Hi Shelly,

You're right: 50 MB Preferred memory assigned to Word 2001 should be plenty.
I'm glad you found the fix.

As for the OS update problem ... It's possible that someone here will know
the answer and reply to you (I don't myself). But since it's a Mac, not an
Office issue, you may be better off on a Mac forum like MacFixit.com.

I didn't change the default folder name. I'm sure mine is the same as
yours. No, it didn't permit me to show it where to do the updates or
find the applications. It's built in to the installer.

Yes, I did have classic running when I did the installer. I moved the
installer around too, thinking it may need to be in the OS 9 apps
folder. I tried several things, none of which would work. I had a
similar issue with a Fireworks update. Never could get it to work either.

At least Word is working now. As long as that is happening, I'm not too
worried about the update, but it would be nice to do the updates.
Fireworks and Word both seem to be somewhat buggy, especially when
they're both running. I thought the updates might help.

Thanks Beth. Actually it's the Word update I'm trying to run. It doesn't
know where to find the original Office or Word application to update it.

I don't know. I do know what when I first installed Office 2001 on my
computer running Panther, I was able to run the updates.

Actually, another guess--repair permissions. Perhaps the problem is not
that the installer can't find the folder but that it doesn't have permission
to access it. Make sure you are in an administrator account when you run the
installer.
