Is there a switch I can add to the "Today" date format
that will keep the date from advancing once the document
is created...."create" date is not what I want.

I want the user to have "todays" date fill in a date field
when they open/create a new document off a template. When
the document is opened subsequently, I want the date to
remain static and not advance to the current "opening"
date. Is this a switch or some other method??

Best regards.....

You really do want the CREATEDATE field. When a new document is created from
a template, the field will be set to today's date and will stay there when
you re-open the document later.

In order to make this work, you need to save your original as a Word
template, and have new documents created off it.

You are using a DATE or TIME field rather than a CREATEDATE field. This
field should be put in the original template if possible. I know you said
you didn't want the CREATEDATE field, but that is what this field does when
in a template - it inserts the date of _document_ creation!

In the document in question, press Alt-F9 to display field codes. Then
change the field to a CREATEDATE field, press F9 and then Alt-F9.

See http://addbalance.com/word/datefields1.htm for information on the
different kinds of datefields and how to format them.
