Word deselects objects I select

I'm creating something in MS Word 2000 and for some reason it started
unselecting drawing objects I have selected. To select one item I have to
click on it about three times. Selecting multiple objects has become
impossible. I can no longer group anything. I thought at first it was my
mouse so I installed a new one and then tried the original one that came with
the computer. Same thing. My virus scan is up to date and shows nothing
when I scan the document. This is happening in different documents as well
so it's not just a corrupt document. I also tried "Detect and Repair" with
no luck.

Any ideas out there?

Hi Dwyane,

Do these documents tend to have a lot of drawings or objects
in them?

If you use File=>Save As and save the document to a new name
then close and open Word do you get the same behavior?

Have you cleared out your temporary browser and temp files
using Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>System=>Disk cleanup
and, with Word closed from Start=>Search located and deleted
files found with the string ~$*.*;*.tmp
