Word doesn't work and can't delete office

lenny

Hi,
Loads of problems here! I have office 2000 installed. All the office
programs work OKexcept for Word. Word opens and then hangs for ever. I have
deleted normal.dot with no change. When I try to delete word or Office from
the Windows uninstall utility again it just stalls and nothing happens. I
also can't install a version over the installed one as the instillation
stalls as soon as it has installed the instillation files. I am then unable
to close the program.

I am sure that I do not have any nasties on the computer. (Norton and
adaware are up to date and recently run with no problems.)

Please help as I am completely stuck here.

I have exactly the same problem. This is what I have posted elsewhere.

I am working with Microsoft Office 2000 Premium. Suddenly for no apparent
reason, Microsoft Word will no longer load. When I try to open the program,
I see on the bottom left corner of my screen "Requesting virus scan ...".
Following that I get the following message:

"Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Please tell microsoft about this problem"

etc.

BTW, my virus definitions are current, and according to Norton AntiVirus, I
have no viruses on my PC.

So I tried to repair the program by going to Control Panel/Add or Remove
Programs/ Microsoft Office. When I click on Change, the setup automatically
goes to the setup in "Maintenance Mode". (It does show the regular setup
window for a fraction of a second.) So I went through that repair setup.
After the setup, and a reboot, trying to start Word again, I get the same
error message.

So I tried to remove the program, and go though a fresh setup. Strangely, at
setup, it again goes automatically to the Maintenance mode. After this
installation, I get the same error message when I try to start Word. So I
searched the Net for answers.

Here I found, that Office 2000 does not completely uninstall, even after a
remove command. Isn't that nice of Microsoft. The core files, as well as
some Registry keys stay installed, so at each setup, it goes to Maintenance
mode. So Microsoft has a solution. Check this out. About 190 files to
delete, one by one.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;219423

At http://www.thenakedpc.com/articles/v05/05/0505-04.html, I found out an
alternative method to remove Office 2000 completely, with a program called
"Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility" (a.k.a. Eraser 2000).
Unfortunately this program does not seem to work in XP, which is the OS that
I have. See: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q239938

But then I found something at
http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/20416/20416.html

Read the post by Tim Moore, the first post after the article. He tricked
Eraser 2000 to work on an XP machine. I tried it. I ran it after removing
Office 2000 the regular way, as instructed. It did remove a lot more files,
but many of the files mentioned on the MS site were still on my PC.

After this, when I tried to install MS Office 2000 again, setup did not go
to maintenance mode, but to the regular installation, where you can choose
which applications to install with what, etc. Just what I wanted.

During the setup, I got a number of error messages. Some of them:

Error 1904 Module C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\OLEDB\MSOLAP.DLL
failed to register. HRESULT - 2147024770

I got the same message mentioning several other files, i.e. MSMDCUBE.DLL,
MSMDGDRV.DLL and MSOLAPUI.DLL

There were a number of other error messages, which I did not write down.

To make a long story short, it still did not work. Now, all the MS programs
I use, Exel, Powerpoint, and Frontpage work just fine, but Word will still
not load.

Does anyone have any ideas, short of wiping my HD clean and reinstalling the
OS?

Any and all ideas appreciated.

to close the program.

At http://www.thenakedpc.com/articles/v05/05/0505-04.html, I found out an
alternative method to remove Office 2000 completely, with a program called
"Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility" (a.k.a. Eraser 2000).
Unfortunately this program does not seem to work in XP, which is the OS that
I have. See: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q239938

But then I found something at
http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/20416/20416.html

Read the post by Tim Moore, the first post after the article. He tricked
Eraser 2000 to work on an XP machine. I tried it. I ran it after removing
Office 2000 the regular way, as instructed. It did remove a lot more files,
but many of the files mentioned on the MS site were still on my PC.

After this, when I tried to install MS Office 2000 again, setup did not go
to maintenance mode, but to the regular installation, where you can choose
which applications to install with what, etc. Just what I wanted.

During the setup, I got a number of error messages. Some of them:

Error 1904 Module C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\OLEDB\MSOLAP.DLL
failed to register. HRESULT - 2147024770

I got the same message mentioning several other files, i.e. MSMDCUBE.DLL,
MSMDGDRV.DLL and MSOLAPUI.DLL

There were a number of other error messages, which I did not write down.

To make a long story short, it still did not work. Now, all the MS programs
I use, Exel, Powerpoint, and Frontpage work just fine, but Word will still
not load.

Does anyone have any ideas, short of wiping my HD clean and reinstalling the
OS?

Any and all ideas appreciated.

Hi,
Loads of problems here!

The "Requesting virus scan" message is usually caused by the
Norton Antivirus Office Plugin. You can turn off the message by
disabling the Office plugin as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in".

I'm guessing your Word startup problem is caused by a damaged
Normal.dot template. With Word closed, rename Normal.dot as
described in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm , and
then try to start Word. If the problem persists, then work
through the other troubleshooting steps in the article.
