Word figure

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have a copy of a Word document sent to me in an email attachment. Looking at it from there (clicking the Word icon in Mail and opening Word that way), the figures look fine on the document. I saved a copy of the document to my iDisk and when I just opened it, some of the figures are not showing, and instead there is a big red X in the figure box. I have never encountered a situation where a Word document sent from a Mac to a Mac had problems with a figure like this.

Any advice?

Thank you, VJD

Opening files from Email is a bad idea. There are several reasons, but the
one that is hurting you is that the email client must first save the file
locally, then open it from the temporary folder it creates.

If you then save that file to your iDisk, the pointers to the pictures
(which are separate files) may not be updated to point to the iDisk.

When you next open the file, it goes looking in your email for the pictures,
by which time the email has deleted them.

Instead, SAVE the file from your email to your hard disk. Then use Finder
to copy it to the iDisk.

Should work then...

Cheers

thank you; not sure how to SAVE from the email without opening the file first in the email. just drag to the desktop? does that do it? i just tried that and that keeps the figures intact. is there a better way to SAVE a .doc from email without first opening it?

but i get the point, that the figures may not come along with the file if i do it the way i had originally. i appreciate your getting back to me.

Drag will work just fine :)

If you look around, you should find "Save As..." on the right-click, and
probably "Save Attachments" on the file menu also. Sorry, I don't use Apple
Mail: check the Help in that program.

Cheers

Mail has a big ol' capsular "Save" button on the attachments line in the
Header of the message in the Message Area as well as that of the Message
window when you actually open the message. The button is right below the
From, Subject, Date & To lines where it indicates the number of attachments
included with the message.

If the Header info isn't displaying go to Mail> Preferences - Viewing &
select something other than "None" from the 'Show Header Detail' list. You
also will not see it if you have 'Raw Source' selected in View> Message.
