Word Files Fail to Open Correctly

Recently I had to have the hard disk on my desktop computer reformatted and
Windows XP reinstalled to overcome a drastic problem. My word processing
data files were saved before the reformat and have been reinstalled on the
computer. The original files were saved with the file extension .wps but
the replacement files have no extension and when I try to download a file
into Word 2000 the result is gibberish. Incidentally, I have also copied
the files to my laptop and these load correctly into Word 2000 on that
computer.

Please can someone suggest how the filres may be correctly downloaded.

Dimension 4500, 2.53GHz processor, 512Mb DIMM, Windows XP, 20Gb hard disk,
80Gb hard disk, Roxio CD R/RW, Blueyonder Broadband & LAN, Dell Photo
All-in-One printer.

Dimension 4100, 1GHz processor, 256Mb SDRAM, Windows ME, 20Gb hard disk,

Inspiron 8600, 1.4 Ghz processor, 512Mb SDRAM, Windows XP Home, 40Gb hard

Hi T.,

You may want to check in Windows Explorer Tools=>Folder Options to turn on the display of file extensions (i.e. the files may still
have the extensions but may not be shown).

The .WPS files could be MS Works documents and you may not have the Works converter installed with Word.

In Word's Tools=>Options=>General dialog you turn on
[x] Confirm conversions at open
and then use File=>Open to try to open one of your old files does the MS Works word processor choice appear? If not, you may want
to download the converter from
http://microsoft.com/products/works/downloads.mspx#Works6.0Conv
