Word formatting out of control

For some reason, Word (2003) has begun doing something I've never seen
it do before. Totally annoying. Whenever I apply formatting such as
italics to an entire paragraph, it sets every paragraph in the document
as italic, regardless of how each paragraph is styled (Heading 1, Body
Text, etc.). If I hit Ctrl + z once, all the other paragraphs return to
their previous state and the paragraph I applied formatting to remains
formatted. I mention this because that would lead me to think it is
some sort of Autoformatting event that can be undone, but I've messed
around with the autoformatting menus to no avail.

Anybody know why this is happening, and more importantly, how to turn
it off. It is not happening on colleagues' computers running the
identical set up, and it never used to do it on mine. I don't know what
I could have done to trigger it.
