Your document has the automatic update stle box checked
off. As a short fix, after you make the format change,
immediately go up to the Edit/Undo option to undo the
automatic format updating. This will remove the bolding
or underlining in the entire doc but leave the formatting
you actually wanted. The long-term fix is to modify the
style (in this case I bet you are using NORMAL) and change
the box where it says "automatically update" to be
unchecked. Hope this helps.
