Word in Off2000 does not save .doc

Hello, my Word (Office 2000 (using XP, sp2)) does not save my documents as a
..doc. The only option I have is to save as a web page. If I manually
change to Word documents .doc, this document is saved as a WordPad document
because only WordPad opens its.
How can I correct this problem?
