Word is unresponsive when I try to save

Whenever I try to do a SAVE or a SAVE AS in WORD the program hangs. I have
downloaded all the service packs and I am up to SP3. Still I cannot get the
program to perform a save. However, I found out about starting WORD in safe
mode by holding down the CNTL key. When in safe mode, SAVE and SAVE AS now
work. What do I do next?

If it works in safe mode there is nothing wrong with Word itself. The
problem is with an associated template or registry file. See
