Word Not Recognizing 'Package' Files

I am trying to insert a .zip file into a word document. When I use
insert--->Object--->From File (display as icon) I get the following error:

'The object was created in package.
The application is not available to open this object.
Make sure the application is properly installed and that it
has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.'

The computer recognizes and can work with zip files. But in the Object
dialogue window, the files to choose from do not seem to have proper
associations (word documents don't have the word icon, zip files don't have
zip icons, etc) except for a few like .gif files. It seems like a file
association problem. This error also precludes me from opening zip files.
however, I can insert and open word documents that are inserted normally.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In order to embed a file into a document, the application that creates the
file must support OLE server/client. If your ZIP program doesn't have that
capability (I don't know of one which does), then Windows will try to use
the generalized "packager" to wrap the file in a format Word can handle.
While wrapping it might be successful, there is often no way to unwrap the
result.

You'll need to unzip the file in order to insert it into Word.

Ahhh so it's a per windows thing. Other users can insert and read the zip
file no problem, but not this user. I was thinking of chaning the file
extension so that it just inserts the file without the packager to get around
that. Any other suggestions. It seems to be just a single computer having the
issue. Thanks.

In that case, I'd try to find out which program is associated with the file type
on a "good" machine and compare it with the "bad" machine. You could try seeing
if "zip" is listed on a "good" machine in the Insert/Object list (it probably
won't be in the list on the "bad" machine). If that yields a standard
application, try uninstalling/reinstalling that on the problem machine.
