Word Outline Numbering Scheme - How To Do?

N

NJ

I have to create a specialized outline list:

Heading 1 = [paragraph symbol] 1505 XXXX
Heading 2 = 1505.1 XXXXX
Heading 3 = 1505.1.1 XXXXX

Basically, I am mixing apples with oranges (starting with a symbol and
then using numbers). I have not had any success in creating this
list.

Any suggestions?

Hi NJ

Follow the instructions at
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

You can enter a paragraph symbol into the Number Format Box in the Customize
Outline Numbered List dialog. To do that, hold down Alt and using the number
pad type 0182. That will insert ¶.

If you need more help, post back and let us know how the numbering is
supposed to increment. For example, is this what you need:

¶ 1505 My First Heading 1 paragraph
1505.1 A heading 2 paragraph
1505.1.1 A heading 3 paragraph
1505.1.2 XXXXX
1505.2 XXXXX
1505.2.1 XXXXX
1505.2.2 XXXXX

¶ 1505 My Second Heading 1 -- what is this numbering supposed to be?
1505.2 XXXXX
1505.2.1 XXXXX

Hope this helps.

I was about to congratulate myself on findng 'New Bullet' in the
Number style box and pickng out a paragraph symbol as the bullet. It
worked fine except that once you put in the paragraph symbol you can't
have a number too -- that *is* the number.

You can get your apples and oranges with the LISTNUM field, though.

First go into the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog and name the
list template to which your Heading styles are linked in the box at
the bottom of the dialog, 'ListNum field list name'.

Then on a blank new line Insert > Symbol -- choose the paragraph mark.

Following the paragraph mark, press Ctrl-F9 and between the brackets
type:

{ LISTNUM MyListTemplateName \L 1 }

Alt-F9 will toggle the field so the result is displayed.

Now select the paragraph symbol and the LISTNUM field together and
either copy them for re-use or, if you want to get fancy, turn them
into an AutoText entry.

If this level must be marked to the table of contents, you have to
select each heading and press Shift-Alt-o. Whatever you see in the
Entry box at the top is what you'll see in the table of contents.

SHAUNA: Just the perfect solution. I tried Unicode but was
unsuccessful. Thanks very much.
