word product key

I purchased new in box works 05, i cannot get the product
key to work for word, keeps giving me invalid error, the
item was purchased unopend, am i doing somthing wrong

i contaced microsoft, they worked me through the problem,

i had an older version i had to remove before it would
accept the new one
