Word program opens everytime a new document is opened

I am using Word 2000 Office on with XP. Everytime I open
a new word document, "Word" opens again. Its like for as
many documents that I have open I have the same amount of
Word programs running. Is there a setting that corrects
this?

No it doesn't open a new instance of Word. What you are seeing is SDI
interface in action which was introduced as long ago as Word 2000. See:
