word questions

I recently loaded Office on my computer that already had Works on it. Now I
cannot open any docs created with Works. Help? Also, when I create Word
Doc, the file type is Wordpad, as is the icon. How can I change this? I
read past posts, and I did try winword /r. When I create a doc in Word, the
filetype and icon are still with Wordpad?
