Word Spell Check

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) The spell check for Word 2008 has stopped working. I've checked the preferences to make sure that "check spelling" is checked but I can't figure out how to turn it back on.

Thanks,

If you create a new document & intentionally type some errors does the spell
checker work?

Does it fail to catch misspellings only in certain documents? Are they docs
you've created received from elsewhere? Is the content pasted from another
source (such as a web page)?

Please be more specific as there are several directions to pursue. Which one
depends on the specific circumstances you're running into.

Also: What is your exact update of Office 2008?

The problem seems to occur when I copy something from the web. I've tried copying and moving parts of the document to a new document but it doesn't seem to matter. If I create the document and don't paste anything into it, then the spell checker works. My update is 12.2.1

That would certainly explain it :) First, though, you are behind on Office
updates -- 12.2.3 is current, so that should be addressed... But I doubt
that it will have any effect on the spell check issue.

When you copy from the web there's no telling what you're actually copying
because you can't see everything that's there. One possibility is that the
content carries language formatting for a language which Mac Word has no
proofing tools. In that case the program will not check the spelling because
it doesn't have a dictionary to check it against.

For current content already in a document, select the text then go to Tools>
Language & select your preferred language. See if spell check works then. If
it does it will confirm the problem. For future endeavors you can follow the
same procedure or use Edit> Paste Special> Unformatted Text to avoid the
language issue altogether.
