Track changes

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Is there some way to make "highlight changes while editing" on by default?

Thanks

There may be, but I'd strongly recommend against it. Routine/constant use of
Track Changes is a sure recipe for disaster.

I'd still like to know if there is one! I only ever really use word to comments docs other people send me and it drives me nuts having to switch it on every single time ....

It isn't a global condition of the application, it's a document-specific
setting. The only way to make it 'automatic' would be via Apple Script or
(in a version that supports it) VBA. Just in case you aren't aware, there
are several ways you can activate Track Changes rather easily:

1- Click the TRK button on the Status Bar.

2- Use the built-in keystroke: Shift+Command+E, or

3- Assign a custom keystroke to the ToolsRevisonMarksToggle command.

Your last message suggests that you may be concerned only with inserting
Comments rather than using full-blown change tracking. If that's the case
you can use Option+Command+A to insert a Comment without activating Track
Changes. The Reviewing Toolbar will be activated as well.

Yes. If you use Tools>Protect Document... Click "Tracked Changes" and
assign a password, other users will be unable to turn the change tracking
off.

As Bob says, if you do this, every so often a document will corrupt; the
less skilled the other users are, the sooner this will happen. But it WILL
happen, even with very other users.

Frequently when it corrupts, you will be unable to retrieve any of the text,
you will lose the entire content.

Are you sure you want to gamble with the stakes against you so high?

Cheers
