Word won't run anymore

O

one_quick_question

For some strange reason, MS word 2007 won't open for me anymore. It has
worked fine until a few days ago, but now whenever I click on a file to open
or try to open the application, I get a message that says "There is not
enough memory or disk space to run Word." I have read that this is most
likely a compatibility program problem, but Word has worked fine until very
recently and as far as I know I have not downloaded any programs that would
interfere with word. I run XP and have the student edition of Office 2007 if
that helps.

I looked at the link and tried some of the things they suggested, esp trying
to find the startup path for word. I found the folder, but it is empty. I did
a search for the normal.dotx file you were talking about, but couldn't find
that one either. I appreciate you trying to help, though

You need to enable System Files and Hidden Files and Folders under Windows
Explorer, Options. Then you will find normal.dotm (not normal.dotx that I
mentioned).

I found the normal.dotm file, deleted it, and word still won't run. After
Thanksgiving, I'm gonna see if I can get one of my more technologically
minded friends to help me. I appreciate your willingness to help, though.

I presume that you have rebooted your computer since the problem began. If
not, then reboot. About 90% of the time, the issue you're seeing is cleared
by rebooting.

If you have already rebooted, the next thing to try is Repair, which you can
run from Windows' Control Panel: Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add or
Remove Programs - Office 2007 - Change - Repair - Continue, and follow the
prompts.

I usually reboot after performing a Repair.

If that does not fix the problem, the next thing to try would be to delete
the Data key in the registry, which is located here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word

Remember that the error is a generic error message that really means that
Windows does not know what it wrong; so don't go looking for disk or memory
problems.

What happens when you try starting in Safe Mode? From, Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word start now?

Terry-I couldn't get word to run in safe mode
Herb- I tried repairing and rebooting. It didn't help. I couldn't find the
folder or the file you were talking about.

Have you got a local printer driver installed and set as the Windows Default
printer?

Terry

O

one_quick_question

No. I don't have a printer that works here. I have never tried to print
anything from this computer. I just tried to print a random page and it sent
me to the set up wizard for the fax machine. As far as I can tell, there is
no default printer.

Word won't work without a locally installed printer driver set as the
Windows default. It doesn't matter if you don't have a printer, you just
need to install a driver. Download one of the Canon Pixma drivers and
install it as a local printer.

one_quick_question

I followed your instructions and still can't get word to run. I have never
needed a printer to run word. I downloaded Microsoft office either late last
year or earlier this year. I was told that it was a trial, and after 6 months
the trial would expire. I had to do this for a college course. That trial time
passed and I was still able to use word. I am wondering if somehow that trial
expired without warning. That maybe my problem.

Time trialed versions usually go into reduced functionality mode: that is
you can open documents and read them but that is about all. I have never
heard of a 6-month version though, so maybe it is something different.

I just experienced the same thing. I was advised by a Microsoft Architect (a
friend) to upload Abode updates and then restart. Once I did this it enabled
me to go in and repair work through the control panel and the problem is
fixed. Apparently, there are instances where word 2007 and old versions of
Adobe conflict. Try that.

Well...Sanciry here...and I have the same problem. Did everything
recommended in above threads. And, I tried updating Adobe like brown said,
restarted, but what do you mean when u say..."repair work through control
panel"???
Any help would be appreciated!!!! I really need to open some word documents!
Thanks....

Open Control Panel, select Microsoft Office 2007 and then choose REPAIR.

However, have you deleted the Word Data Key? Run Regedit, navigate to the
key and press Delete.

Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

Thank you Terry...
Already tried the REPAIR route...didn't work.
so....followed your instructions (i'm no expert here <smile) and when I got
to the DATA folder - three files in there
Default - value not set
Settings - Reg Binary (bunch of numbers)
Toolbars - Reg Binary (bunch of numbers)

Am I supposed to delete the whole DATA folder or one of the files in it???
Sorry...i'm a puter dummy!

Terry, thank you, but u know what? That didn't work either.
I spent half the night up searching the net and every "tech" site I checked
had people writing in with the exact same problem.....and no one had an easy
solution. People have tried about everything according to the multiple tech
sites I've read.
They could only suggest setting up another user idenity and transferring all
files over to that new user. <<yuck>> For some reason...new user identity
worked.
Even uninstalling and re-installing did not work.

But, what I did was System Restore back 2 weeks...WALLAHA!!! I have Word
back.
Now...how long it will last before this happens again..who knows.
I do think (JMHO) from what i've read...it may have something to do with
Adobe and the add-ins to Word??? because the only thing i did lately was
update MS patches, and an Adobe one.

I really think this is something that SOMEBODY that "can talk the talk"
needs to get with Microsoft on and report...BAD glitch in Office 2007.

Thank you for your help, but there really, according to the whole net, is no
way to repair Office (2000 & 2007) when this happens.

I'm sorry Terry! I'll stay put here. When I first posted..didn't realize
it was the same threadl
Anyway...from what I can figure...wouldn't it be the computer (Windows)
sending the error message (not enough memory or disk space to run word)
....not Word? Therefore, changes in Word wouldn't work. Seems to me like it
has to be something in the computer's settings/files.
And, why would users be able to set up new identies and Word work under a
new identity, if it wasn't something had to have "changed" with the user
files, maybe? Since I ran Word last, the only thing I changed was install
a couple of critical MS updates and that Jan. malicious...removal tool , run
Windows LiveOneCare and update Adobe 9.
Maybe the add-ins Adobe has with Word maybe messes up something?
Am I making sense?
BTW...I did find a place on MS site to send in feedback about Office
2007...put the problem in a nutshell and reported it. A no-answer feedback
link. Challenged them to check their discussion groups and the net to see
what is happening with this.
