Word X for Mac Toolbar Buttons Not Working

J

Jim

Hello,

I'm on a Mac G4 using Mac OS X version 10.2.8. I recently installed the
following updates for my Word X for Mac program: Office X 10.1.2,
Office X 10.1.4, and Office X 10.1.5.

Since then I've been having trouble with two of my toolbars. On the
Formatting toolbar, the buttons for Dictionary, Font Color, Bold, and
Italic don't work, while other buttons such as New Blank Document and
Underline work normally.

On the Drawing toolbar, the button for Font Color doesn't work. On my
Standard and Visual Basic toolbars, all buttons are working normally.

The buttons which don't work are visible on the toolbar, but are faded
as if inactive, and don't respond.

I've tried deleting the inactive buttons by hitting the "Command" key on
my keyboard and dragging the button off the toolbar. That doesn't
work. I've tried copying a button which works by hitting the "Option"
key and dragging the button to a new toolbar location. That doesn't
work.

Can you help with this problem?

First, I'd choose Tools/Customize, and in the Toolbars tab of the
Customize dialog, select the Menu Bar item (so that it's highlighted,
not just checking the checkbox) and click Reset.

If that doesn't work, I'd try, with Word closed, renaming your Normal
template and renaming or deleting your
~:Library:preference:Microsoft:Word Settings (10) file (where ~ is your
home directory).

Toolbars and their customizations are stored in Templates, and Word will
create a fresh Normal when you next start it.

Thanks very much. Your first suggestion was a good one. The toolbars
now work perfectly.
