Depending on the amount of RAM in your PC, the upper limits for Microsoft
Project 2003 are:
1,000,000 tasks
1,000,000 resources
998 subprojects in a master project
No limit to task dependencies in a project
I doubt you will hit the upper limits for tasks, resources, or subprojects
in a master project. The larger issue, however, is setting external
dependencies. Our recommendation is to keep it simple. Try to limit
yourself to only the bare bones number of external dependencies absolutely
needed. The more exteran dependencies you have across multiple projects,
the more complex your project management environment becomes, and the
greater the odds that you will generate a circular reference error. In
Micosoft Project, circular reference errors are very difficult to trace, and
can prevent your project(s) from recalculating until you locate and remove
the link causing the error. Also, when setting dependencies, absolutely
AVOID setting dependencies on summary tasks. Set dependencies on regular
tasks and milestones, but steer clear of summary tasks when setting internal
or external dependencies. Hope this helps.
