XL for Mac 2004 can't or open files

I have expereinced two strange XL 2004 behaviors this week that I hope
someone can shed some light on.

Issue #1

1. A user created a 7 page XL document in Office 2007 and saved it as
a native 2007 file. This was saved to our Xserve shared drive. The
next user opened up the file using mac office 2004 and viewed the doc
but did not save and closed the doc. The third user, also a mac user
could not open the file at all.

I then had the original Office 2007 user change her save parameter to
save as an older Win 95 document. We got the same results.

Second issue:
2. Our Mac Office 2004 users created an XL file and save it to their
desktops. After the file is saved the users try to open the files
from their desktops and could not.

Heeeelllppp!

I wonder how the first Mac user opened the .xlsx file? There's no
converter available that I know of.

NeoOffice and iWork08 can supposedly read them, but not MacOffice04, yet.

I then had the original Office 2007 user change her save parameter to

Curiouser and curiouser. Both MacOffice users should have been able to
open the XL95 (not Win95, which has nothing to do with Office file
formats) files.

What happens when she saves the file as an XL97-03 file?

What does "could not" mean? Did they double click them? If so, what
happened? Did they try to open them from the File/Open menu? If so, what
happened? Did they get error messages? Nothing? A crash? Do the Get Info
dialogs for the files indicate that they are XL files?

I HAVE BEEN SENT AN .XLSX FILE FROM A PC. HOW DO I OPEN IT WITH OFFICE 2003?
If you really mean Excel 2003, get the windows file converter. If you mean
Excel 2004, download the beta converter from the Mactopia site. Or, ask the
Windows source to save the file in xls format.
