xls attachments will not open only the application

I receive attachments but when I try to open them only the application opens
with a blank screen, without opening the xls spreadsheet. I can save and
then open but not convenient.

In Excel 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | Options | General tab |
uncheck the "Ignore other applications" box | OK.

In Excel 2007, click on Office Button | Excel Options | Advanced |
scroll down to the General section and uncheck the "Ignore other
applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" box | OK.

If the above doesn't help, then close Excel and re-register Excel in
Windows by clicking on Start | Run | Open: excel /unregserver | OK |
Open: excel /regserver | OK.
