All I want to do is copy my publisher files onto a DVD+R disc which has
audio, DVD+R database, backup, archive, mac pc written on it and the computer
keeps saying it is the wrong disc!

Can you copy to a different disk? Are you using third party software or
Microsoft OS built-in utilities?

This isn't a Publisher issue, you should be able to drag and drop the file onto
the disk the same as any other file. Look at your software documentation.

Are you trying to use the DVD+R in place of a hard drive or flash drive? The
general wisdom here seems to be that optical media should not be used when
working on and regularly resaving a Publisher document, only for archiving or
transportation. You did clearly indicate a DVD+R, but I still thought it
worth mentioning.

Windows XP can not natively write to a DVD it can only write to CDs. You
need a third party burning software to burn DVDs. There are free ones
available on the internet. Google for them.
