Zero display

How do I get zero cents to be displayed in an Excel cell without using the
dollar symbol? When I enter $1.00, the entry remains, if I enter it as 1.00,
the value changes to 1 when exiting the cell.

In Format Cell, select Number, and you'll see that number of decimal places
is already set to 2.

Or, use the Increase Decimals button on the toolbar.
