Zip Code Formating

In Excel 2002 I formatted my 5 digit zip codes to display as text because
some start with a 0. It displays fine in my worksheet but when I merge into
labels only a 0 appears where the 5 digits should be. I tried formatting to a
custom number such as 00000 but it does not save that way. Any ideas?

No need to reply. I went to the Data menu and selected "Text to Column" and
selected change from "General" display to "Text" and that allowed for zip
codes with leading 0's to appear correctly when merged into lables. I still
don't know why it does not allow me to save as a "Custom Number" when I
select cell formatting.

For ZIP Code 00899 type '00899 That's a single quote.

What about Excel's zip code formatting? Format Cell/Special - Zip and Zip+4
are options.
