Zombie Links in Word Document

J

Jeff Eckermann

I have a Word document which gets much of its content from Excel.
Periodically I create reports by running code which creates a copy of
the Word file, updates the links and then breaks them (to preserve the
content).

The problem is that when I open up the new report, I get the message
about updating of links, which is odd because none are supposed to
exist. The "Links" option in the Edit menu is greyed out. When I run
through all of the objects (shapes, fields etc.) in the document, I
find none that are of the right kind to have links. However, if I hit
"ok" on the "update links" dialog, the Excel file opens up...

Everything appears to work ok otherwise, but the problem is that I
have to post all of these reports onto a shared drive for various
other users to access, and I don't want all of the distractions. All
of this is pretty weird, and I don't know how to diagnose it. I
couldn't find anything by Googling, probably because I couldn't
formulate a suitable query term.

Any help would be welcome.
TIA
