The BCWP for delayed tasks?

W

Wireman

hi buddies,

I have set the physical % complete for earned value calculation in my MS
Project 2003. I found something confused for the BCWP calculation.

The calulation of ACWP is correct for the tasks which's finish later than
current date as below.(BCWP = Baselined Cost * Physical % Complete, it's
correct!)
% Complete || Physical % Complete || Finish || Current Date ||
Baslined Cost|| Actual Cost || BCWS || BCWP || ACWP
25% || 20% || 03/28/2008|| 03/21/2008
|| 80 || 20 || 40 || 16 || 20

However, if the task is delayed which means the finish date is before
current date. The BCWP is totally different.
% Complete || Physical % Complete || Finish || Current Date ||
Baslined Cost|| Actual Cost || BCWS || BCWP || ACWP
25% || 20% || 03/14/2008|| 03/21/2008
|| 80 || 20 || 80 || 20 || 20

It seems MS Project still use % Complete to calcualte the BCWP for the
delayed tasks, even the setting for cauculation is Physical % Complete
already.

How could I always get the BCWP = Baselined Cost * Physical % Complete, no
matter the task is delayed or not? Anyone can help me? Thanks in advance.

You have a logic error. There is no such thing as unfinished work to the
left of the status date. If the task is 87% finished as of March 20, 2008,
then there is no chance it will ever finish before March 20th. Increase the
duration of your incomplete work to reflect a new finish date after 20 MAR
2008 (the status date). Using physical%Complete allows your value to remain
constant. Now try BCWP.

Remember the golden rules:
*All finish dates to left of status date are 100%, otherwise you need a new
finish date. Increase task duration (or remaining duration)
*All start dates to the left of the status date require some %Complete
greater than 0% otherwise you need a new start date. the task was delayed.
*If a task is 100% complete with a finish date to the right of the status
date, then key the actual finish date ..... it can't be "tomorrow". If you
don't have any better idea for finish, key the status date.
*You cannot have %Complete greater than 0% for any task with a start date
greater than the status date. If you claim a %complete, then you started the
task, move the start date to the left.

The key fields to watch are remaining duration and remaining work.

If I may interject, Have you updated your project to the status date? Try
Tools/Tracking/Update Project.../Reschedule uncompleted work to start
after... and select the Status date that you entered in Project/Project
Information.
