1GB .pst-file...how to reduce?

My .pst-file had a size of 1.1GB.
I have just deleted 500MB of mails.

I have stopped and restarted Outlook but the size of the .pst-file is still
1.1GB.

How can I reduce it?

Hi ,
deletle your mails from the delete items permamently then
go to control panel-> mail -> select your profile -> click
on properties->select your pst file -> click on properties
->click on compact now.
