2007 Word file not saving properly

I wonder if anyone can help with this problem.

I recently bought a copy of office 2007 with word 2007. If I open word, type
in aome text and then just press the save icon to save it as a word document,
when I then later open that same document the contents/font is all corrupted
and it looks like some sort of programmer language.

I think I had a similar problem a few months ago when people were sending me
word 2007 documents and I was then using xp version. I understand how this
may happen as it is two different versions but can’t understand why now that
I have updated to word 2007 why when I save the document it doesn’t save
properly.

When I save the document as compatible with word 2003, which is one of the
options it works fine. When I save it as a 2003 word document a little word
icon appears next to the file but when I just press the save button (default
setting) with out specifying 2003 it saves it but the file doesn’t have the
word icon next to it and has docx in a little text box when I hover over
file. This is a document I am creating myself, not a template or one that has
been emailed or created on another pc.

Any help much appreciated.
