24 Hr calendar based resources

Hi

I am facing this problem in scheduling a resource whose calendar is a 24Hr
calendar with some exceptions like (one day the resource is working only for
4 hrs)

I create a Task of duration = 3days and effort = 50 hours and then assign
this resource. The resource is allocated as follows:
Day 1 = 33.33 hours (working hours in cal = 24)
Day 2 = 8.33 hrs (working hour in cal = 4 hrs)
Day 3 = 8.33 hrs (working hr in cal = 24 hrs)

Why is the assignment distrbuted like this? (Why not 24 + 4 + 22?)
(%age assignment units on gantt view = 208%, which I can understand is
calculated as Est. Effort / (Duration * Day to hour Conversion setting) .
But still it just seems to be showing peak units and the logic behin
timephased assignment is not clear to me). Pleas help.

Thanks
SM

Be careful with scheduling like this. If the resource is on a 24 hour
calendar and that task duration is 3 days, that means the resource doesn't
stop work for any reason once the task starts...the poor guy doesn't take a
meal break, take a nap, see his family, or do anything but work solid for 72
continuous hours. People rarely can work like that ... machines do but not
the people the run them. If by 'resource with a 24 hour calendar' you mean
a team of people with similar skills who collectively work shifts so the
entire day is covered, one shift relieving the other as the day progresses,
that's another matter but IMHO is best scheduled as three distinct
resources - day shift workers, swing shift workers, and grave shift
workers - whose calendars are 8 hour calendars rather than lumping the whole
group together into one resource with a 24 hour calendar. Breaking them out
gives you far better control.

Just offering an opinion that may help stave off future headaches for you.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply. Resource here can be thought of as a automated
machine. Actually what baffles me is the way the assignment has been
distributed. I know I can go to the task usage view and correct it, but I am
wondering why isn't working the same way when i directly assign a resource on
the gantt view.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

Thanks

I seemed to have figured out the answer to my own problem.

The default start time of an assignment for a 24 hr resource is 8.00 AM. So
on the first day resource is available to work for 16 hours only, that is,
8.00 AM - 12.00 AM

(It sounds so much common sense on hindsight!)
