70 MB for a Word document due to visio

Hi,

I am doing a lot of technical documents with word and all my diagrams are
visio.

When I use 3D computers or server the Word doc becomes huge.

A 60 pages becomes 70 Mb on my disk
Do you have advices ?

Thanks

You could paste the images as metafiles rather than embed Visio. This would
give you good visual quality with no ability to edit from the Word document.

There are so many diagrams... and it is not easy. Each time I modify the
vision, I have to copy and paste ...

Technically, why it is so big ?

Thanks

I believe because an entire copy of the Visio document is stored in each
embedded image. There is typically no centralized storage for OLE embedded
objects.

Ok thanks.

Do you know how I can detect the size of each embedded image... and maybe
replace some 3D logs by basic ones ?

Can I do a macro for that (that would give me the list of images and the
size) ?

Thanks again

I'm wondering if your Visio diagrams are in file with multiple pages, or
in multiple single page files? If multiple pages, I'm guessing based on
what Mark said that even the un-used pages of the diagram are embedded
in the OLE object. Embedding different pages from the same file then
maybe means the un-used diagrams are included multiple times over and over.

Maybe there will be less overhead if each Visio diagram is in a separate
file?

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.

In my word document, I just do an insert, object, Microsoft visio drawing.

There is only 1 page, per diagram.

Also, I noticed that if I do an Active Directory diagram, and if I use the
triangle symbol, in the "BASIC SHAPES" shape the size is normal, but if I
use the 'domain 3d' triangle in the 'active directory sites and services' ..
the document is pretty big.

Same if I use 1D computer rather than 3D computers...

I would like to have only 1 word document with X embedded visio drawing
because it is simple to send to the customer only 1 file.

Are there any tool to list all the embedded documents and their size?

Thanks a lot for your help

Regards

I'm not aware of such a tool which lists all sizes of embedded images.

Keep it simple. Can you just not use Word as the container? Publish
your Visio work as an Adobe PDF file and send the customer the PDF.
Supplement the PDF with inserted text created in Word if you want.
Supplement it even further with thumnails and bookmarks.

Use PDF as the container, not Word. (Always remember Word is a word
processor and a tool for making documents. It has many weaknesses as a
document container).

We do the above all the time with many apps, not just Visio. Much
easier for us and the customers for dealing with published documents.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
