Is your Office 97 CD an upgrade version?.. without a qualifying product
already installed, you will not have any luck installing it..

just bought a dell. running xp. tried to install office 97, kicked
me out, help

I don't know what your error message was but I'm pretty sure your Dell
has Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed and Office 97 probably
won't install on it.

You can upgrade to a later version of Office or search earlier posts on
this newsgroup for a workaround which may or may not work.

Sorry, I know that's not the answer you wanted.

Just for a "data point" I have successfully installed Office 97 on 2
computers running Windows XP SP2. I didn't have to do anything special IIRC.
(Neither was the "upgrade" version.)

It might help to have some more specific details than "kicked me out."

Were you able to install the HTML options, or did you do a custom
install and uncheck those?

I am able to save Word and Excel documents in HTML format. I just ran setup
and tried to install "Web authoring tools," and that failed with "Failed to
register HTMLMarq.ocx." I ran setup again, and it now is only willing to do
a fresh install, not add/remove components. I have the feeling this is going
to come back to haunt me, but the Office 97 programs (Word, Excel, etc.)
seem to still work. I wonder how I can undo the damage. I'm going to leave
well enough alone since I already appear to have a "bumblebee" (flies even
though it's not supposed to...).

I think the "error message" has been mis-interpreted. Try it again, but
this time note the exact error message.

Try this, go to add/remove programs and remove SP2 (it should be there
since you installed it and it wasn't slipstreamed into the CD).

Then install Office 97, install all the Office 97 updates and SRs, then
re-install SP2.

It should work but... your description sounds like there may be another
issue.. give it a shot anyway and let us know what happens please.
