_vti_cnf files

Most of my FrontPage 2002 folders have these hidden _vti_cnf folders
within them. They may well be important for *something* but deleting
them has made absolutely no difference (so far) to the functioning of
FrontPage or to the functioning of my uploaded website. Not deleting
them, on the other hand, plays havoc with my album webpages when I use
JAlbum. I regularly search for them in WinXP and delete every instance.
I certainly don't upload any of them.

Can someone tell me what these folders are for and whether I can stop FP
2002 from creating them?

Those _vti folder are the FP extensions that allow FP to manage your site and keep track of the
changes that you make. They should have no impact on JAlbum pages, as long as you work on them
outside of FP, and then import the finished pages back into FP, where the _vti folder would then
note that content has been modified.

Pete,
You don't! They are actually an important part of the FrontPage
Server Extensions. They contain meta information about the files in your
web. Deleting them could lead to eventual corruption of an FP web as they
are important and FP does use them.

Hope this helps,

Thanks both,

But Mark, what if my web host does not use FrontPage Extensions (which
is the case), are they still needed?

And Thomas, the affect on JAlbum is the generation of another _vti_cnf
image folder. Very annoying.

The _vti folders are never publish between webs, so when you publish to a server that has the FP
extensions, the extensions on the server create the _vti folders specific for that web on that
server, you local copy is never published.

If you use a 3rd Party FTP application, then do not upload the _vti folders, if you use FP's FTP
publish then the _vti folders are not uploaded.

re: JAlbum, how is the _vti folders a problem?
